Search Engine Optimization

SEO is a feature that I offer to all of my clients, but what is it really? People have often asked me what all goes into search engine optimization, and can it really help increase their website’s rankings. The answer is yes, and I am going to share with you some of the steps that go into proper SEO, and why it is a good investment for most of my clients.

Initially, SEO consisted of hidden tags containing hundreds to thousands of keywords that were relevant (or not) to the website’s content. The idea was to flood every website with as much content as possible in order to bring in a maximum number of viewers. But SEO consists of much more than simply bringing large audiences to a site which probably appeals to only a select group of people. It is meant to help target a specific audience or market, and make it easy for this market to find your content.

Below are a list of steps that I follow when creating a search engine friendly website.

  • Valid XHTML
  • Including only good, clean content
  • Proper Keyword Research
  • Ensure all internal links are functional
  • Include “alt” tags with all images
  • Create XML and HTML sitemaps
  • Establish link partners with reputable websites

The overall idea is to make it as easy as possible for search engines to find and crawl your website. The more information you give a search engine about your site the better they can determine a proper ranking.
